This week we will explain the blocking procedure to a front kick. Blocking is even more important than striking. Sometimes it is not possible to get in that first strike so evading and preventing injury to yourself is your first priority.

Blocking a Front Kick

  • From a fighting stance raise your front leg.
  • Make sure it is not too high that you leave your groin exposed.
  • Your foot should be turned inward leaving a hard edge.
  • As the striking leg approaches - snap quickly with your foot at the knee or shin of your opponent.
  • This strike will at the very least surprise your opponent allowing for your own side kick  - or if done correctly could break the knee of your opponent.

We must stress that every technique is just one part of a multi-faceted attack. Each block is but a parry to a strike - each strike is but a setup for another. The follow-up is as important than the set-up. While most martial arts stress a block, return, a strike, return, this is based on a street fighting or ring experience where your opponent continues to advance.
